When to take probiotics? Should I take probiotics everyday?
I talk a lot about gut health with my clients and it’s only natural that the question, “Do I need a probiotic?” comes up frequently. If we decide a probiotic may be beneficial for him or her, the very next question is, “When should I take a probiotic?” and “Should I take a probiotic everyday?” Let’s dive into this two part question below.
When should I take probiotics?
The best time of day to take a probiotic is before meals on an empty stomach. If that’s not possible, you want to aim for at least a half hour before a meal or two hours after a meal. I typically recommend that my clients take delayed release capsule probiotics first thing in the morning because for some people, probiotics can cause sleep disturbances. I find this to be the case more often in clients with a diagnosis of anxiety or depression. To avoid sleep trouble and maximize potency, take delayed-release capsule probiotics in the morning without food.
Should I take a probiotic everyday?
Not necessarily. This is where it’s important to remember that your gut microbiome is as unique as your fingerprint. No one gut is the same and there is no such thing as the “perfect” gut microbiome. If you have GI conditions such as IBS, Crohn’s, Ulcerative Colitis, chronic constipation, or Celiac Disease, regular consistency with a probiotic may be helpful. Of note, certain probiotic strains have been more evidence to support these conditions than other strains. In general though, probiotics are more of a supplement that is episodial to restore balance in the digestive system.
When you would want to consider a probiotic:
You’re taking an antibiotic.
You’re experiencing short term GI distress.
You’re experiencing more stress than usual.
You want to prevent traveler’s diarrhea.
You are traveling or returned from traveling with GI dysbiosis.
With **some** GI conditions to help alleviate symptoms.
With **some** autoimmune conditions to prevent dysbiosis.
